The History and Background of Aye Sabz Gumbad Wale

The naat Aye Sabz Gumbad Wale was written by a poet whose heart was filled with the love of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The green dome (Gumbad-e-Khizra) of Masjid al-Nabawi was originally built in 1817 during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II. It was painted green in 1837 and has remained an iconic symbol of Madina ever since.

Aye Sabz Gumbad Waale, mujh ko Madina bula le.

English Translation and Meaning

Verse 1: “O Owner of the Green Dome, call me to Madina.” The poet directly addresses the Prophet, expressing longing to visit Madina.

Verse 2: “O my Lord, grant me the vision of Madina in my destiny.” A prayer for divine favour.

Verse 3: “I cannot come on my own, so You call me.” A beautiful expression of humility.

Verse 4: “Just give me one glance and take my life away.” Complete devotion.

Verse 5: “Your beggar at the door will ask for nothing else. Just one gracious glance and Your intercession.” Humble request for intercession.

Verse 6: “May our dwelling be in the streets of Madina.” The ultimate desire to live near the Prophet.

Verse 7: “Make me the light of Your eyes. Make me the joy of Your nation.” Plea for spiritual elevation.
